Introducing... The Plant Ledger

I’m launching an email newsletter called The Plant Ledger. Here’s the lowdown on what it is and why you should subscribe.

As a journalist, I tend to keep a weather eye on developments in the world of media; during the last year, I’ve noticed the rise of the newsletter. It reminded me of watching the rapid rise of the podcast in 2016 and 2017 as I prepared to launch my houseplant podcast On The Ledge.

Now, newsletters regularly drop into my inbox on diverse topics that interest me: some of my favourites are recipe-based Just To Delight by Bre Graham (try my fave, roasted tomato rice and honey feta), Freelance Writing Jobs by Sian Meades-Williams and Hotflash, a newsletter about the (peri)menopause. Why wasn’t there anything equivalent for the UK houseplant scene? While marketing emails from individual planty brands both big and small proliferate, there was no one email newsletter to cover what’s happening across the UK houseplant industry, written by a journalist with years of experience.

So I decided to make one. As soon as I finished the manuscript for Legends of the Leaf, my forthcoming book profiling 25 iconic houseplants, at the end of January 2022, I started pulling together a plan for The Plant Ledger. The first edition goes out on March 11: it will initially come out fortnightly, ramping up to weekly if demand is there for that to happen. You can subscribe here, and you’ll get my free in-depth guide to tackling fungus gnats as a thankyou. You can of course subscribe if you are not in the UK, but the focus will be what is happening within these shores; shop openings, closings and sales, new plant introductions, controversies and rows, discount codes and events, plus some tips and tricks along the way.

The Plant Ledger will be funded by advertising, with opportunities for small planty businesses to book low-cost advertising to help them reach their core audience. There will also be opportunities for larger brands to sponsor entire editions. (Interested in advertising? Find out more.)

This is an experiment: no doubt The Plant Ledger will evolve along the way. What won’t change is that you can be assured of high-quality content that helps you keep on top of upcoming events and trends. So do let me know your thoughts in the comments, or drop a line to theplantledger@gmail.com.
